Step 1: Remove Polish with an Essential Oil Nail Polish Remover

You can’t go wrong with the fresh, zesty aroma of lemon essential oil, cold-pressed from the rinds of lemons. With its bright and joyful aroma, lemon can help support healthy and strong nails. Similarly, frankincense essential oil is packed with benefits to help maintain not only radiant skin but also healthy nails. Together they help create a healthier nail polish remover. 

Essential oil nail polish remover recipe:

Using a small funnel pour 1 ounce of rubbing alcohol into a two-ounce glass bottle. Remove the funnel and add 5 drops lemon essential oil and 5 drops frankincense essential oil. 

Place funnel back on the bottle and top with approximately 1 ounce more of rubbing alcohol. Remove the funnel, close the lid, and shake to combine.

How to remove polish:

1. Add a nickel to quarter size amount of this homemade nail polish remover to a cotton round or cotton ball. 

2. Firmly rub away from the cuticle on the nail toward the of the nail to remove polish. Re-apply more nail polish remover as needed and replace the cotton round when covered by polish. 

3. Once removed, rinse or wash your nails and hands before moving to the next step.

Step 2 and 3: DIY Hot Oil Manicure and Trim

The second step in most manicures is soaking nails in a bowl of warm water to soften the nails before trimming. This is useful however, there’s a new manicure technique called a hot oil manicure that is quickly gaining popularity. 

What is a hot oil manicure? 

A hot oil manicure involves soaking your nails and hands in a bowl of heated essential oils, body butter, carrier oils, and vitamin E blended for repairing and replenishing nails. 

Here’s what you’ll need:

Hot Oil DIY Manicure Recipe: 

Scoop 1 cup of unrefined coconut oil into a small glass measuring cup. Add 2 tablespoons of castor oil and place in the microwave. Heat in 30-second intervals for 30 seconds to 1 minute max. 

Add 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil and each drop of essential oil. Whip together with a fork or whisk and scoop into a small to medium bowl, large enough to submerge your hands.

How do you do a hot oil manicure? 

1. Gently dip your hands into the hot oil mixture, covering the nails and cuticles. Apply with hands or beauty brush as needed. 

2. Then soak in the hot oil until it has completely cooled off.

3. Gently massage the cooled oil mixture over your nail beds, hands, and up to your wrists. 

4. You can place your hands in gloves for further moisturizing if needed before pat drying with a towel.

Afterward, trim and file nails in a rounded shape that follows the shape of the nail bed.

How to restore cuticles:

Glide your homemade cuticle roller across the nail bed and cuticles. Using your fingers or a buffer rub the oil into the cuticles and nail beds on each hand.
