I have been a light sleeper as long as I can remember. Maybe I owe it to a weak bladder or sharp ears, but waking up 3 to 4 times a night used to be my norm.

I have tried numerous things to help me get deep sleep naturally. You know the kind where you wake up blinking to sunlight, slowing realizing how much time has passed. Then you feel rested and ready to start the day?

That’s called uninterrupted deep sleep. And nothing has been more effective for me as using essential oils for sleep!

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is on of the most popular essential oils by far! Coveted for its many therapeutic benefits including its calming abilities.

Relaxing and soothing are synonymous with lavender essential oil. Often used to ease tension and stress it is one of the best essential oils for sleep and relaxation.

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your pillow and bed sheets or make an essential oil pillow mist.

Frankincense Essential Oil –

Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii) has a broad range of uses. Many use it for meditative practices and beauty routines.

It has an earthy, uplifting aroma that’s perfect for grounding and easing stress. Add frankincense essential oil to your diffuser to create a relaxing environment.

Valerian Essential Oil –

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) essential oil possesses an earthy smell that promotes feelings of serenity, relaxation, and eases occasional restlessness.

Add Valerian to your bedtime routine by diffusing a few drops 30 minutes before you go to sleep or massage it into the bottoms of your feet after a long day to foster relaxation.

Cedarwood Essential Oil –

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) essential oil’s woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma creates a relaxing, calming, and comforting atmosphere.

It helps to relax and soothe the mind and body, and it’s perfect to diffuse at the end of the day to help support a relaxing nighttime routine.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil –

Bergamot Essential Oil –

You might think bergamot essential oil would have an invigorating effect because it’s extracted from a citrus fruit. But, the opposite is true!

Bergamot (Citrus aurantium bergamia) essential oil has a calming effect that can help to reduce anxiety and stress. It’s great to diffuse at work or at home when stress levels are high. Or add to roller blend and apply it your wrists, abdomen, or bottoms of feet.

Vetiver Essential Oil –

Originating from a perennial grass native to the tropical regions in Asia, vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) essential oil is produced from the steam distillation of the plant’s root and the oil has a woodsy scent.

It’s one of the top essential oils for sleep as it provides a calming, grounding effect on emotions. A great way to use vetiver essential oil is in a soothing, aromatic massage after a long day.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil –

Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) essential oil has a calming aroma that helps create feelings of peace and patience.

This oil can be applied neat or as part of massage to desired areas. Apply to wrists and the back of the neck for a peaceful evening.

How to Use Essential Oils for Sleep

Follow these tips to use essential oils for sleep aromatically and topically.

Aromatically:

  1. Pick a method to diffuse essential oils here.
  2. Start diffusing essential oils 30 minutes before bed to promote a relaxing bedtime routine. Or place a diffuser on your nightstand to diffuse while you sleep.
  3. Create a pillow mist to spritz on pillows and bed linens.

Topically:

  1. When using topically dilute using a carrier oil such as organic fractionated coconut oil.
  2. Apply diluted oils to your wrists, temples, spine, back of neck, or bottoms of the feet.
