What Is A Clay Diffuser?

If you haven’t seen or used a clay diffuser before, let us explain what a clay diffuser is. A clay diffuser is a small, porous disc, purely made of clay, that is often called a stone diffuser. It is specifically designed to diffuse essential oils.

These diffusers are made from materials such as terracotta, which is a natural, red-brown clay that can hold essential oils and slowly release their aroma.

Unlike ultrasonic terracotta diffusers, which require electricity and water, clay diffusers do not need any power source or additional materials to function. This is why we’ve found them perfect for small spaces and offer a portable option for aromatherapy on the go. We think they are the perfect addition to a small bowl on your desk, nightstand, or living room side table.

How Do Clay Diffusers Work?

Clay diffusers work by absorbing essential oils into their porous surface. Once the oil is absorbed, it slowly evaporates and releases its aroma into the surrounding air without needing heat or electricity.

How do you use a terracotta diffuser? To use a clay diffuser made of terracotta, simply add a few drops of your essential oil to the surface of the diffuser and allow it to absorb and naturally diffuse the scent.

This method of essential oil diffusion is great to joy your favorite essential oil scents. We’ve been diffusing our Herbal Escape Blend. It’s a refreshing and uplifting aroma of eucalyptus combined with the clean, herbal scent of rosemary, that creates a beautiful and invigorating fragrance that can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

How To Make Terrcoatta Diffuser Stones:

First, small slice a section from the terracotta clay with a clay pottery tool or waxed twine.

Then line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the clay from sticking.

Next, take a small portion of clay and fill a section of a silicone mold like this one or this one we used to make flowers. Smooth the back of the clay for an even surface. Then gently pop the flower out and carefully place it on the lined baking sheet.

Once you’ve made each terracotta stone, it’s time to let them dry. You can either leave them out to air dry for a few days or bake them in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour.

After your diffuser stones have dried, it’s time to add some essential oils! Try our  Herbal Escape Blend recipe above or oils like lavender for relaxation, peppermint for energy, or sage for a refreshing scent.
