How Much Essential Oil Do You Put In A Sachet?
Obviously, when it comes to making scented wax sachets, the amount of essential oils you use is key. These botanical wax sachets are stunning, and they definitely attract attention on appearance. But the whole purpose of creating wax sachets is the SCENT!
So, let me help you get this right.
You must add more essential oils to wax sachets than candles or reed diffusers. Why? Unlike candles and reed diffusers, the oils won’t get pulled up a wick or reed and dispersed into the air.
Therefore, I aim for a 10 to 12 percent fragrance load. Say what? To calculate this, you can use a quick fragrance calculator. Enter the amount of wax you’re using and the fragrance load percentage you’re after, and it will give you ounces back.
You’ll need half an ounce of essential oils to make these 3 wax sachets with a 10 – 12% fragrance load.
To create a blend recipe
Let’s Break It Down
½ oz of essential oil is equal to 1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons of essential oil
3 teaspoons of essential oil are equal to 300 drops
300 drops of essential oil fill a 15 ml bottle
So, you can use one 15 ml bottle of essential oil or create a blend recipe like this:
- First Scent: 5 ml bottle = 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential oil
- 2nd Scent: 5 ml bottle = 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential oil
- Third Scent: 5 ml bottle = 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential oil
I used this combo for these summery-scented wax sachets; you can, too!
- 5 ml grapefruit essential oil
- 5 ml geranium essential oil
- 5 ml orange essential oil
If you have fewer oils or want an essential oil to shine through, use 10 ml instead of 5 and add less of the others. Or, if you want to include more than three essential oils, split the third scent into two scents, using 2.5 ml each.

How Long Do Essential Oil Sachets Last?
How long wax sachets last greatly depends on where you put wax sachets. From someone who LOVES a good scent, I can’t tell you enough how practical scented sachets are to use. (If you’ve ever had a wax melt warmer or reed diffuser knocked over, I know you know.)
Here’s a list of places to put sachets and ideas for use to make the scent last longer!
Where to Put Wax Sachets
Closets: Hang them on hangers to keep clothes smelling fresh in closets.
Shoes: Pop one in each shoe to banish odor.
Bathroom: Hang from a towel hook to add a touch of elegance and scent.
Drawers: Tuck them between folded clothes or linens. Wrapped in tissue or slipped inside a muslin bag to prevent wax stains.
Luggage: Place one inside your suitcase to avoid musty smells when not in use.
Office: Keep one in your desk drawer for a refreshing work environment.
Tips to Make the Scent Last Longer
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep wax sachets away from windows to prevent the scent from fading quickly.
Store in Airtight Containers: Store sachets in airtight bags or containers when not in use.
Re-Scent: Once a month, refresh the scent by adding a drop or two of essential oil to the dried flowers in a sachet.
Avoid Heat: Keep them away from heat sources to prevent the wax from melting.
Rotate Locations: Move them around occasionally to refresh the scent.
With these tips and tricks, your wax sachets will stay fragrant and beautiful for months to come. With proper use, they typically smell great for 3-6 months.

Essential Oil Scented Wax Sachet Instructions
Step 1:
Before you begin, you may want to cover your surface with parchment paper or a silicone mat to make any spills easy to clean up. Then, gather all your supplies nearby. And lay the silicone mold on a wood cutting board for stability.
Step 2:
Start with a bag of dried orange slices, or follow these steps to dry oranges in the oven. Cut a few dried orange slices in half with utility scissors and set aside.
Step 3:
Place a medium glass measuring cup on a digital scale and scoop 5.25 ounces of this soy wax into it. Then, place the wax-filled pitcher in the microwave and melt at 30-second intervals until melted. (The wax I used is microwave-safe)
Step 4:
Remove the melted wax from the microwave and add 5 ml of grapefruit essential oil, 5 ml of geranium essential oil, and 5 ml of orange essential oil to the wax. Stir slowly to meld the ingredients together.
Step 5:
Now, slowly pour the fragrant wax into the three round sections of the wax sachet silicone mold. Then, let the wax cool for several minutes until it becomes cloudy.
Step 6:
When the wax has begun setting up and appears cloudy, add your botanicals. I added one dried orange slice to each section. Then, I carefully tucked dried pomegranate flowers and pink rose buds into a crescent moon shape around the orange slices.
Step 7:
After the sachets have completely cooled and hardened, pop each out of the silicone mold. (I waited several hours before I removed mine.) Add twine through the hole of each wax sachet and tie the twine off with an adequate length to hang each sachet.
Notes & Tips:
- If your botanicals sink into the wax on step 6, let it cure longer before adding more.
- Once cured, if the surface of a wax sachet isn’t smooth or has a bubble, use a heat gun to melt those areas. Let the wax sachet cool and harden again before removing it from the mold.
- Remember to place them in strategic spots like closets and drawers and refresh the scent occasionally to enjoy the aromatic benefits for longer.
