Geranium Diffuser Blend Recipes Better Than Rose

Here are geranium diffuser blend recipes that feel romantic, floral, and fresh.

Geraniums add fragrant foliage and boldly saturated, colorful blooms to any garden or flower bouquet. Cherry red, Barbie pink, bright orange, royal purple, or snow white, geraniums bloom generously from spring through autumn.

Gardeners and florists covet their dramatic color and cascades of blossoms in hanging baskets, window boxes, large planters, and elegant floral arrangements. Yet, scent is the real reason that drives their popularity.

There are over 200 varieties of geraniums, but only a small number are classified as scented geraniums. And from these, only a select few are used to produce essential oils.

Pelargonium graveolens is the most notable of these flowers, with large, velvety dark green leaves and pink flowers. Prized for its rose aroma, essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stems, and flower petals.

The result creates a bottle of beautifully fresh, sweet, rosy floral, with natural green undertones.

I find that geranium essential oil is incredibly feminine with sweet rose-like notes that feel soft and comforting. It mimics the romantic appeal of roses without the heaviness or price tag. Because of this, I often recommend geranium as a rose substitute in essential oil blends.

And many beauty and cosmetic companies do just that, creating deodorants, perfumes, lotions, and hair care products with geranium in place of rose. But it’s just as easy to enjoy its fresh, floral scent in the diffuser!

What essential oils blend with geranium?

Geranium essential oil has a heady, botanical scent that makes an ideal base for diffuser blends. It sits beautifully in the floral category of the essential oil blending wheel. I like to think of this wheel as a scent-based version of a color wheel.

You see, oils in categories, next to each other, blend naturally. And a category that sits directly opposite will create blends with depth and contrast.

This is why citrus oils lift and freshen floral aromas. At the same time, oils such as sandalwood and vanilla add warmth and richness to the light airiness of most floral scents.

On top of that, like most florals, geranium is delicate, sweet, and a little romantic. It always blends well with other botanical scents. And unlike rose essential oil, it never feels too strong.

Opposite on the essential oil blending wheel lies woodland oils. Their deep, grounding, masculine scent feels completely different. Yet, they are often blended together to create sophisticated, complex aromas.
