Sage Essential Oil Blends Inspired By My Desert Stay

Sage essential oil blends inspired by the desert and crafted in the heart of the southwest. Learn what sage essential oil blends well with and how much oil to add to a diffuser.

This summer, we took an inspiring trip to the desert, where we were first greeted by native sagebrush. Like a painter brushing the warm desert landscape with just a touch of green, the sage ever so gracefully grew.

At first touch, the aroma of sage filled the desert air, and the scent lingered on my hands. It was just the beginning of our desert excursion.

We got lost in the narrow streets of Alberque’s Old Town, dotted with artisan shops in adobe dwellings from the 1700s. And we wandered the lavender fields of Los Poblanos adjacent to the Rio Grande River.

Our adventure continued as we traveled up the Taos Mountian range into Sante Fe, New Mexico. With a view of Georgia O Keeffe’s home in the mountains and a stop at Georgia O Keeffe’s museum, we were soaking up the bohemian vibe.

It was everything I’d been looking forward to! And it inspired me to create these beautiful sage essential oil blend recipes. Whether you seek a grounding blend for journaling or a purifying sage blend for cleaning, you’ll find both and more here.

What Does Sage Essential Oil Smell Like?

Sage essential oil has a distinctive scent that is herbal, earthy, and slightly sweet. The aroma is reminiscent of the fresh leaves of the sage plant, evoking a sense of clarity and grounding.

It carries a mildly camphoraceous undertone, much less than woodland oils such as fir needle. This makes it a versatile and pleasant fragrance often used for its aromatic and therapeutic properties.

Is clary sage and sage oil the same?

While their names would suggest they are similar, Young Living notes that “sage essential oil and clary sage carry significant differences.” They like to think of them as ‘second cousins’ versus ‘siblings’ within the oil world.

And describe how sage is strong, herbal, and clarifying, while clary sage is gentle and soothing with a sweet, floral fragrance. Quite the difference, don’t you think?

When you compare each oil’s benefits, their differences stand out even more.

Sage Essential Oil Benefits:

Clarifying and Focus: Sage oil is known for its strong, herbal aroma that promotes mental clarity and concentration. It is often used to enhance focus during activities like studying or working.

Purifying: The robust scent of sage makes it a popular choice for purifying the air. It can help eliminate unwanted odors and create a clean, fresh atmosphere.

Grounding: With its earthy notes, sage is grounding and can be used in aromatherapy to create a sense of stability and rootedness.

Clary Sage Essential Oil Benefits:

Relaxing and Calming: Clary sage’s milder, sweet, and floral fragrance is coveted for its calming properties. Therefore, it is often used to promote relaxation and alleviate stress.

Balancing Hormones: Clary sage is renowned for its potential hormone-balancing effects. It is commonly used to ease menstrual discomfort and manage hormonal fluctuations.

Emotional Well-being: The soothing aroma of clary sage can positively affect our mood and emotional well-being.

While both oils belong to the sage family, their unique compositions give rise to different benefits.

4 Ways To Diffuse Sage Essential Oils Blends

New to diffusing essential oils? Well, you’ll be happy to know it’s very simple. All you need is one of these diffuser methods to infuse your kitchen, laundry room, or entryway with sage essential oil blends!

Ultrasonic Diffuser

These popular devices use water and ultrasonic vibrations to disperse essential oils into the air as a fine mist. Add an ultrasonic diffuser to your next Target drive-up order (and don’t forget your Starbucks – yes, you can add it to drive-up orders!!) Shop some of my favorites here:

Reed Diffuser

Create a reed diffuser by combining essential oils with a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, and placing reed sticks into the mixture. The reeds absorb the oil and gradually release the scent into the room. Try this DIY reed diffuser tutorial to add a touch of elegance to your space.

Terracotta Diffuser Stones

Craft your diffuser stones using terracotta clay. These porous stones absorb essential oils and release their fragrance slowly over time. Check out this tutorial for handmade terracotta diffuser stones to infuse your environment with natural scents.

Essential Oil Tea Light Diffuser

These diffusers often come in decorative designs and use a heat source, such as a tea light candle (I make my own), to gently warm the essential oils and disperse their aroma throughout the room.

Whether it’s the elegance of reed diffusers, the ease and versatility of ultrasonic oil diffusers, the creativity of handmade terracotta stones, or another option – you’ll be able to soak up all the sage essential oil benefits!
