How Much Essential Oil Do You Need?
If you’re making summer scented candles with essential oil, you’ll need a lot more essential oil than diffuser recipes. However, unlike a diffuser blend recipe, which typically has a one-time use, a candle scent blend can be enjoyed for months to come.
For scented candles, you want to aim for a 6 percent fragrance load. This equates to 1 ounce of essential oil per pound of candle wax. I’ve broken this down into printable charts in the Oily Chic Library, but I’ll share it here, too.
To make a standard 8-ounce candle with essential oil, you’ll need:
- A total of ½ an ounce of essential oils
- ½ oz of essential oil is equal to 1 tablespoon
- 1 tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons of essential oil
- 3 teaspoons of essential oil is equal to 300 drops
- There are 300 drops of essential oil in a 15 ml bottle
I find it’s easier to create essential oil candle blend recipes when you break the tablespoon into 3 teaspoons like this:
- First Scent: 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential = 5 ml bottle
- 2nd Scent: 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential = 5 ml bottle
- Third Scent: 1 teaspoon = 100 drops of essential = 5 ml bottle
If you want an essential oil to shine through in your candle, use 2 teaspoons instead of one and add less of the others. If you want to include more than three essential oils, split the third scent into two scents of ½ teaspoon each.
There are a lot of ways you can go about it! To make it easy, I’ve created a list of done-for-you summer essential oil candle blends to help you mix scents together into incredible scented candles.
