What do you need to make essential oil lip balm at home?

To make essential oil lip balm, we start with this simple base of four all-natural ingredients. Then we add essential oils to create yummy, fun flavors and scents.

Shea Butter

First up, we include ultra-moisturizing shea butter in the base. This stuff is so amazing! It comes from the nut of the African shea tree and knows how to lock in moisture and combat chapped lips.

Beeswax

Next, we add beeswax to protect the skin barrier on our lips. It’s like a second skin, really. Use can use any beeswax for lip balm as long it’s cosmetic grade. I use these beeswax pastilles that are USDA organic and made right here in Texas! The small pellets are very easy to measure and use in skin care recipes.

Coconut Oil

Third, we add organic cold-processed coconut oil to the base to provide rapid results for dry lips. It’s an incredible moisturizer full of nutrients and my favorite carrier oil.

Honey

Last we drizzle organic honey into the base to soften and soothe dry lips. Did you know it’s a natural humectant that draws in moisture?

Now that we have our lip balm base, it’s time to choose essential oils – the best part, right?

Which essential oils are good for lip balm?

When you are selecting essential oils for lip balm, let me first say – don’t use the cheap stuff! This is going on your lips!! You’re worth the good stuff. I use Young Living essential oils because the quality is unbeatable.

Also, I love fruity flavors just as much as anyone else but some citrus essential oils are photosensitive. So if you’re applying lip balm to your lips and they are likely to be exposed to the sun for extended amounts of time, don’t use citrus oils. But hey, if it’s wintertime or you live like a vampire in the Seattle area, possibly in a little town known as Forks, go for it!

Honestly, the best essential oils for the skin are fantastic for soothing and nourishing dry lips. And it’s as easy as adding a few drops to our lip balm base.

Get Ready to Be Obsessed With This DIY Essential Oil Lip Balm Too!

This essential oil lip balm recipe doesn’t disappoint! You’re going to wonder why the heck you hadn’t made one before. Here’s how to make essential oil lip balm in less than ten minutes!

Lip Balm Ingredients:

4 teaspoons beeswax pastilles

3 teaspoons shea butter

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 teaspoon honey

20 drops total of essential oils (see lip balm blends above)

16 lip balm tubes

How to Make Essential Oil Lip Balm:

First, remove caps from each lip balm tube and make sure they are rolled all the way down. Then place them on a flat surface.

Add four teaspoons of beeswax pastilles, three teaspoons of shea butter, and two tablespoons of coconut oil to a glass measuring cup.

Place it in the microwave and melt in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring in between until melted.

Next, add one teaspoon of honey to the base and stir well to incorporate.

Then choose from a lip balm recipe above, adding no more than a total of 20 essential oil drops to the mixture. (I wanted to make 4 of each lip balm blend recipe, so I divided the lip balm base into four bowls. Then I added my essential oil blends one at a time.)

Carefully pour or pipe into lip balm tubes (these are the ones I use) with a pipette dropper or an essential oil dropper while the mixture is hot.

If one of your mixtures gets cold, you can heat it again for a few seconds BEFORE adding the essential oils.

After filling each lip balm tube allow them to cool 30 minutes before handling them.
