5 Diffusing Essential Oils Methods and Tips:
1# Reed Essential Oil Diffuser Method
Natural wood reed diffusers are a great method to get started with essential oils. Aromatherapy blends slowly travel up the reeds that are held in a jar and release the essential oils into the air.
Similar to a vase of fresh flowers, reed diffusers gently fill a space with an aroma. The closer you are to the reeds the more you’ll smell them.
I find that they work well for small spaces like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Make a reed diffuser with the supplies and instructions below.
Supply List:
- 1 glass or ceramic jar with a narrow opening
- 5 diffuser reeds or bamboo skewers
- ¼ cup fractionated coconut oil
- 20 to 25 drops of essential oils
How to make a reed essential oil diffuser:
Cut diffuser reeds or bamboo skewers to size for the jar, with approximately six inches above the jar. Set aside.
Pour coconut oil into a jar. Note: fractionated coconut oil is liquid at room temperature. Do not substitute for standard coconut oil, as it is not.
Add essential oil drops for a total of 20 to 25 drops. For example, if you choose a blend that calls for 5 drops total multiply the drops by 4 for the correct ratio.
Place pre-cut diffuser reeds into a
#2 Water Essential Oil Diffusion Method
Also known as steam diffusion, it provides more absorption than any of the other methods described here when inhaled and seems to work the fastest.
To refresh or remove strong odors from a space follow these instructions:
- Boil a pot of water on the stove.
- Carefully pour into a stainless steel bowl and add 1 to 3 drops of essential oil or an aromatherapy blend.
- The steam of the boiling water will quickly disperse the atmosphere and purify the space.

#3 Clay Essential Oil Diffuser Method
You’ll be enjoying the scent all day long with clay diffusion! Unglazed clay pendants such as terracotta clay are porous and can absorb the essential oils for simple diffusion.
Clay pendants
To use clay diffuser jewelry place 1 to 3 drops of essential oil onto the pendant. Then let it sit for a few minutes until the oil is absorbed before wearing. Reapply as needed to refresh the scent.
You can also use this method with versatile clay ornaments. Pick a few non christmas looking ornaments made of natural clay, like terracotta to hang in your laundry room, car, closets, or other small spaces.
Like the aromatherapy jewelry, the scent of essential oils is released by evaporation.
#4 Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffusing Method
Or leave it to technology to diffuse essential oils. And ultrasonic oil diffuser uses ultrasonic frequencies to vibrate a small disk placed under a small amount of water.
Adding a handful of essential oils to the water allows the vibration to vaporize the essential oils and water into a fine mist, thus disperses the essential oils into the air. No heat is involved and it’s easy to use!
Ultrasonic diffusers are certainly the most popular method for diffusing essential oils. They come in a variety of sleek and attractive designs to fit any decor.
#5 Leather Diffusion Method
Enjoy the benefits of diffusing no matter where you go with leather jewelry and accessories.
Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil or an aromatherapy blend on the inside of a leather bracelet, necklace, keychain, or even purse strap.
The essential oils will absorb quickly and won’t drip after applied.
